What starts with cheese and biscuits ends with something blacker (but boy, those killer curves)
If you need me, don't look me up for a while. I'm going to be hanging out somewhere in the early nineties.
Fucked with work and the whole staying focused thing I kick back home and break open the cheese, biscuits and fancy arsed condiments. Well, okay, it's all fancy arsed, of course. Habourne Blue with Highland oat cakes, home made fig and pear chutney, a drizzle of Greek honey, 10 year old Madeira Bual (such rough living!) etc etc etc. But that's not the story. The cheese is gone but the glass is topped up. I start the YouTube time swallow with some harmless Millimetric and Hacker - all good ENDURANCE fodder - but then someone starts bouncing me subverting waves from the past and before long I've found my way to Horror Head by Curve with no trail of crumbs leading back. Damn, I used to have all these songs, actual physical cds and record sleeves, each piece of artwork with an emotional kick and that's before the sound goes on. Picked up the Frozen EP when it first hit the shops, returning quickly for their first EP, Ten Little Girls (I remember scrawling Blindfold lyrics on my sketch book with silver pen) and then moving continually forwards and deeper, falling forwards and deeper...
I had a huge crush on Toni Halliday of course, didn't everyone (voted NMA 'object of desire' in 92)? My first and perhaps my only - Alison from Cranes was perhaps another but probably more an extension of Toni. She / they always amazed live. Dressed in black velvet catsuits she teetered at the edge of the stage casting dark magics and commanding the enthralled crowd with that beautiful honey and opium voice. I can barely remember it at all truth be told but the feeling is there and again now and that's what matters and lasts.
Sure, the music ebbed after a while but I was being drawn on to other newer interests and it was only natural. But no, their early material carved out a niche within 'goth' shoe gaze, absolutely unique against the bland indie backdrop. Whilst their album efforts started to pack some filler, BlackerThreeTracker EP, Pink Girl With The Blue Eyes (Recovery quite possibly my all time favourite) both from the end of their heyday are arguably some of their finest material - still dark as hell and with banshee howls but razor sharp production to go with it. But there's so much more material to rediscover and now I have a beginning without need for an end.
